"To win like this today, in front of all the people, and especially our Basque fans was great. The Tour didn't start well for us (Euskaltel) in the Alps, but today we did something special. I'm very proud of my team for this win; they worked very hard all day, from kilometre one." Those were the words of Roberto Laiseka of Team Euskaltel, a 32 year old from Guernica, who rode to a dramatic solo stage win today at Luz Ardiden, while Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong and his doyen Jan Ullrich once again went head to head on the final climb to the ski station. Hot and sunny weather would once again bake the Tour's 152 remaining riders on Sunday's short and intense stage from Tarbes to Luz Ardiden, the final one in the Pyrenees triptych that has decided the outcome of the 2001 Tour de France. Credit Agricole was out to make an impact today and after an early break by Jens Voigt was caught, the real action started after an hour of racing on the Cat. 4 Cote de Capvern-les-Bain, the move of the day. 10 solid riders were away, including young talents Sven Montgomery (FdJ), Andreas Klöden (Telekom), Mario Aerts (Lotto Adecco), David Moncoutie (Cofidis), Wladimir Belli (Fassa Bortolo) and American Bobby Julich (Credit Agricole)
This group had their liberty up the Aspin, with the Mr. T of Tour De France Mountains, le Col du Tourmalet awaiting them. A big, bald, bad-ass hors categorie climb, le Tourmalet is often called "le toit du Tour", the highest point in the Tour De France. At 2115 meters, this is a 16.9 km climb at an average gradient of 7.4%, with some steep parts near the summit. A special prize this year honouring the bust of Jacques Goddet, the Director of the "modern" Tour De France from 1936 to 1986, who died last year at 95 years old. In front of enormous crowds arrayed along the mountain road, Montgomery and Aerts rode a hard pace from the base of the Tourmalet climb and quickly blew the deadweight non-climbers remaining in their break out the back. With 5 km to go to the summit, only Montgomery, Aerts, Moncoutie and Julich were left, with the American beginning to fade. Over the summit, Montgomery took the FF20,000 special prize of the Souvenir Jacques Goddet. Behind, the 20 strong chase group with the Maillot Jaune was being led up the Tourmalet 3'00 behind the break, with the Deutsche Telekom train trying to crack Armstrong. The gap was falling as the race crested the summit and dropped down the fast, wide open descent to Luz-Saint-Saveur, with only the final 13.4 km hors categorie climb to Luz-Ardiden. Several hundred thousand spectators were arrayed on the mountains natural amphitheatre, ready for a show on the hot, sunny afternoon. They were not to be disappointed, as the chase of the break was simple great racing. As the break passed the sign indicating 13 km to go at the foot of the climb to Ardiden, the group Maillot Jaune of Lance Armstrong had began to close the gap on the break. Like a jammed Pac Man game, the frenetic USPS led-chase swallowed the seconds on the leaders, with Chechu Rubiera putting the hurt on the ever diminishing chase group. The tiring Montgomery dropped off as the gap hit 1'05", with a struggling Aerts trying to keep the tempo up.
Wladimir Belli had been playing Freddy Furbo in the break and as he saw the others fading, the Italian jumped away in search of the solo stage win. But he didn't reckon that someone else had the same idea just 1' behind in the group Maillot Jaune. Roberto Laiseka (Euskaltel) had made the same move two days ago on the similar climb to Plateau de Bonsacre in Stage 12, blasting past Armstrong and Ullrich to almost catch stage winner Cardenas. With 10 km left to the summit, Laiseka made his move from the group Maillot Jaune and in only 3 km, the 32 year old from Guernica passed the remnants of the break with a tremendous surge, with only Belli left to catch. By 5 km to go, Laiseka was free and clear and headed for the podium. The man from Guernica has ridden his entire career with Euskaltel and Euskadi, where he turned pro in 1994. Known as an intelligent rider with a streak of Basque stubbornness, his 4 pro wins and 6th in the 2000 Vuelta, place Laiseka as a pillar of the Basque formation. As Laiseka had done himself 15 years ago, a human wave of exultant Basques powered their man from their team to an audacious win in Luz Ardiden.
Behind Laiseka, Lance had sent teammate Roberto Heras to the front and the diminutive powerhouse from Salamanca took over where Chechu left off. Everyone but Ullrich was dropped, as Jan hung tough once again. Only Laiseka and Belli were left on the Pac-Man screen with 3 km to go to the finish and as Heras tired a bit, Ullrich attacked. The orange clad Euskaltel man rode to a euphoric win ahead of the obviously pleased Belli, and once again, it was Lance and Ullrich, but this time, Armstrong had the Maillot Jaune and when the two sprinted for 3rd, the generous Armstrong did not attempt to pass Ullrich. After battling across 505 km of the Pyrenees since Friday, Jan reached out to squeeze Armstrong's hand in a sporting gesture of congratulations. Armstrong returned the gesture and now the stage is set for the 2002 Tour De France. As Phillipe Bouvet wrote simply the other day after Armstrong took the Maillot Jaune, "Le Tour est fini." (The Tour is over) With Armstrong now 5'05" ahead of Ullrich, and Andrei Kivilev (Cofidis) holding on to 3rd place, 1'20" ahead of Joseba (ONCE), it will be up to Beloki to pass Kivilev in next Friday's time trial to achieve the podium in Paris. Beloki has improved considerably as a tester last year, while Kivilev is not known for his performances against the watch.
